Race For Life 2015

Finishing ladies

Sunday 19 July saw the ladies out in force for the Hyde Park Race For Life, to raise funds for Cancer Research.

Imperial College ladies descended on Race For Life last weekend to take up the challenge of running or walking five or ten kilometres. Sport Imperial’s Active Lifestyles Team partnered with Hayley Osborn from St Mary hospital to raise money for Cancer Research. The day was hugely supported with over 90 ladies joining our Energia Group. Wearing our fantastic pink t-shirts and enjoying the lovely sun everyone managed to complete the Race.

Together our teams have raised over £1000 to this great cause - and there's still time to donate. Just visit www.justgiving.co.uk/energia or www.justgiving.com/StMarysPaddington to show your support to uor ladies.

Hayley Osborn from St Mary's Gym tells of her Energia team including Kay, a 91 year old participant.

"Kay has been attending the gym for four and a half years now. She is a cardiac referral having had a bypass; she has COPD; recently had surgery for aortic stenosis and broke her hip one Christmas bringing me in some wine as a gift (the wine did not break, she was really pleased with that)! She is so driven with her exercise, fiercely independent but also a little harsh on herself; the race helped change this, she was cheered by strangers and the team on her return. She was also given handshakes on way round and flowers by spectators. She completed the walk in 1hour 40 minutes, holding onto my arm the entire way instead of her walking aid. She is an inspiration and now keen to do an abseil.

We had 11 girls participating from the hospital including Elizabeth; Dawn; Isabelle; Suzanne; me; Aimee; Maisee; Christine; Pegi and Ionie. Two of our girls are survivors and walked brilliantly and many others have worked through health concerns and achieved so much. "

Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and the function after; lots of wonderful food and drink and a time to share stories and make new friends.

After the event the Active Lifestyles Team placed on some well-deserved food and drinks for everyone at Eastside.

If you would like to join us next year make sure you look out for our marketing in the Ethos bulletin sent out monthly. Thank you all for joining us!
