Volunteering opportunities at Imperial Festival 2018

by

Applications are open for all to volunteer at Imperial Festival - the College's flagship celebration of science, engineering and creativity.

Each year hundreds of volunteers lend their time, enthusiasm and skills to the Imperial Festival helping make it a major event in London’s cultural and educational calendars. Anyone can volunteer, whether a staff member, a student or a member of the public who would like to support the College.

More than 250 people from inside and outside the Imperial community sign up to fill a huge variety of volunteer roles, from tour guides to zone assistants, balloon assistants, social media officers and more.

She said: “It was a very interactive event that allowed people to get a first-hand experience of how enjoyable learning can be and it also gave students a taster of the variety of different fields they can research and discover at university.

“I enjoyed working with people from all different backgrounds and felt especially proud when my supplementary school came to support me and I was able to demonstrate what I had learnt.”

Lara Mistry, Imperial’s Public Engagement Programme Manager, said: “Nearly 20,000 visitors attended the Festival last year. The event simply wouldn’t have been possible without the help of the more than 250 staff, students and members of the public who volunteered. We are so grateful for their hard work and enthusiasm to make the Festival a success.”

Amani said: “As part of my experience, I had to actively communicate and engage with the visitors to ensure they were well informed on what was going on at the event and where they were meant to be. As a representative of the College I was handing out leaflets to provide more information whilst maintaining my excitement at all the fantastic exhibitions going on.

“My active role in sharing this with the visitors enhanced my passion for science and I am keen on returning to Imperial's Festival with my tutor group again this year. My interest lies in biology, particularly biomedicine and neurology, and to be able to talk to people in this domain solidified my passion for research.

“I think more people should volunteer as it's a good opportunity to put yourself out there, help others find their way and learn something new too.”

Imperial Festival runs 12-6pm on Saturday 28 and 12-5pm on Sunday 29 April. The free public festival will be held on Imperial’s South Kensington Campus, Exhibition Road, London, SW7 2AZ.

The Festival is free and open to the public. To attend, register online.
