Professor Peter Childs, Head of School, Dyson School of Design Engineering, opened the 3rd Chinese International Conference on Turbomachinery.

In his Opening Speech, Peter noted: Turbomachinery plays a vital role in our society providing power and transportation, the production and combustion of fuels has environmental consequences. Through concerted technical efforts, combined with creativity and innovation we will be able to continue advancements in turbomachinery.

Political assistance has a role to play in enabling national and international funding for research and legislation to for improving environmental emissions and safety. It is important that we each play our roles in creative endeavours aiming at worthwhile innovations that actually help society, improving the lives of individuals and our communities. It is of course crucial that we do so, not at the expense of the environment.

Improvements in efficiency alone may not be enough. Instead we need to aim for transformations that give the combination of improvements in efficiency, reliability, net reduction in emissions and financial benefit to the diverse stakeholders. This is our nexus of change.

Peter also gave the opening keynote on the ‘Gas turbine engine internal and secondary flow system’, Paper CITC 201803261
