PhD student Sabine Bou-Antoun presented her work at an international conference for academic primary care research at the London Barbican Centre

Sabine’s talk, entitled “Age-related decline in primary care antibiotic prescribing for patients with uncomplicated respiratory tract infections following the introduction of the Quality Premium in England: Interrupted time series analysis”, described the impacts seen following the introduction of the Quality Premium (2015/16), a national initiative in England advocating the judicious and appropriate use of antibiotics, with a particular focus on primary care antibiotic prescribing. The results revealed the correlated impacts of this initiative on reductions seen in antibiotic prescribing, particularly for children, as well as a lack of significant change on re-consultations for uncomplicated respiratory tract infections.

Parts of this research and what was presented has recently been published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy (June 2018; https://doi.org/10.1093/jac/dky237),  received media attention in the daily Telegraph as well as others, and was mentioned in the New Scientist.

The annual Society for Academic Primary Care (SAPC) conference held in July is aimed at an international audience focusing on primary care academic research which can improve and positively impact on policy and practice. The conference programme, which included researchers sharing their work through oral presentations, posters, symposia and workshops, included a special emphasis this year on challenges faced by populations on the move; e.g. topics included migration and delivering cross-cultural primary care.
