Professor Mike Lowe

Starting October 2019, Professor Mike Lowe is the new Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial.

Professor Lowe is an alumnus of the department, having graduated with an MSc and PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Imperial College in 1987 and 1993 respectively; he became a member of academic staff in 1994. His research is in Non Destructive Testing, with particular interests in structure guided ultrasound, wave theory, wave scattering, materials characterisation, and analytical and numerical modelling.

Professor Lowe was elected Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2014. He is a director of Guided Ultrasonics Ltd, a spin-out company which was set up to commercialise the outputs of research in ultrasonic guided waves, and he was the creator of the leading software modelling tool DISPERSE. 

The previous HoD, Professor Peter Cawley, will be taking up a new role as Associate Dean for Enterprise within the Faculty of Engineering. Professor Cawley had been Head of the Department since 2012.
