The Imperial Racing Gren Team

Imperial Racing Green have been awarded "Most Effective/Innovative Design in Engineering" at Formula Student 2009

Imperial Racing Green, the College's student led project to design, build and race a hydrogen fuel cell powered vehicle, have been awarded Most Effective/Innovative Design in Engineering at Formula Student 2009, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' annual student motorsport event.

Competing for the first time the Racing Green team debuted their hydrogen cell powered vehicle within the Class 1a category of the competition for low carbon vehicles. They were pitted against teams from five other universities from across Europe, and were delighted to be recognised for the innovative design and use of technology that their vehicle employed.

Imperial Racing Green is the College's student-led flagship project, which intends to prepare students from across Imperial engineering departments for the challenges of a new energy economy, by giving them first hand experience of developing one of the most promising of renewable technologies in a competitive motorsport environment. Imperial Racing Green is an undergraduate teaching project, involving almost 100 students across eight different engineering departments.

Imperial Racing Green has recently been made a priority within the Annual Fund, meaning that alumni and friends of the College can support the project philanthropically. Racing Green is also supported by the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851, and by sponsors, including EnVision, Kokum, Nedstack, Johnson Matthey and ABSL.
