NHLI Athena 2009

NHLI submitted its first Athena SWAN application in April 2009, led by Prof Clare Lloyd and Dr Emma Watson (NHLI Lead for Women and NHLI Athena Administrative Lead at the time, respectively). Following from the application we were awarded an Athena SWAN Silver award for a period of three years. The 2009 application and action plan can be found below:

In granting the Silver Award, the Athena SWAN judges recognised NHLI for:

  • Our consultation process and the efforts that were made to engage as many staff as possible
  • The interesting and innovative initiatives in our action plan
  • Our plans to monitor flexible working more closely
  • The NHLI Foundation Postdoc Travel Awards
  • The FoM Ambassador for Women who has helped identify and encourage women to apply for key external appointments

 

NHLI Athena 2012

In 2012 NHLI submitted an Athena SWAN Silver Award renewal application – lead by Prof Clare Lloyd and Dr Emma Watson – and we were awarded a one-year extension to our Silver Award with an invitation to resubmit the application in April 2014. The 2012 application and action plan can be found below:

NHLI Athena 2014

In April 2014 NHLI submitted an Athena SWAN Silver renewal application, and we were awarded a full renewal. Our current Silver Award is valid until November 2017. The 2014 application and action plan can be found below:

NHLI were commended by the Athena SWAN panel for the following:

  • The New Scientists Day initiative – an event to introduce new staff to the institute and to open up collaborations for new starters
  • Athena SWAN activities are well embedded within the Institute
  • Video conferencing facilities to enable staff and students to take part in meetings remotely
  • Visible support for flexible working
  • Mentoring scheme available to all staff and students
  • Annual Bring Your Child to Work Day
  • NHLI Foundation Postdoc Travel Awards – funding for attending and presenting at conferences, and for covering costs related to caring responsibilities while attending conferences
  • Provision of Equality, Diversity, Harassment and Bullying workshops

The NHLI 2014 Athena application was the last one led by Prof Clare Lloyd and Dr Emma Watson. After the 2014 Athena submission Prof Sian Harding took over as the NHLI Institute Lead for Women, and Dr Maija Maskuniitty started as the NHLI Athena Administrative Lead.

NHLI Athena 2017

The latest NHLI Athena Silver application was submitted in April 2017, under the new post-May 2015 criteria, and is currently under review.
