In this paper we propose a solution to the problem of moment matching with preservation of the port Hamiltonian structure, in the framework of time-domain moment matching. We characterize several families of parameterized port Hamiltonian models that match the moments of a given port Hamiltonian system, at a set of finite interpolation points. We also discuss the problem of Markov parameters matching for linear systems as a moment matching problem for descriptor representations associated with the given system, at zero interpolation points. Solving this problem yields families of parameterized reduced order models that achieve Markov parameter matching. Finally, we apply these results to the port Hamiltonian case, resulting in families of parameterized reduced order port Hamiltonian approximations.

The finite-horizon optimal control problem with input constraints consists in controlling the state of a dynamical system over a finite time interval (possibly unknown) minimizing a cost functional, while satisfying hard constraints on the input. For linear systems the solution of the problem often relies upon the use of bang-bang control signals. For nonlinear systems the "shape" of the optimal input is in general not known. The control input can be found solving an Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman (HJB) partial differential equation (pde): it typically consists of a combination of bang-bang arcs and singular arcs. In the paper a methodology to approximate the solution of the HJB pde arising in the finite-horizon optimal control problem with input constraints is proposed. This approximation yields a dynamic state feedback law. The theory is illustrated by means of an example: the minimum time optimal control problem for an industrial wastewater treatment plant. © IFAC.

Based on the time-domain approach to linear moment matching, we characterize the (subset of) port Hamiltonian/gradient models from the set of parameterized models that match the moments of a given port Hamiltonian/gradient system, at a set of finite points. © IFAC.
