If a heating microscope is used as an `optical dilatometer' it is a useful apparatus for the observation and measuring of shrinkage during the sintering process. It makes the observation of the sintering process possible without contacting and influences of external conditions. The advantages of these technique compared to the conventional dilatometric studies are presented. The heating microscopy applications are described using the sintering behaviour of glass-composite material samples as an example.

A non-destructive forced resonance technique was used as an indirect method to assess the development of microcracking damage in SiC-fibre reinforced glass matrix composites. This was carried out by measuring the Young's modulus and internal friction of samples that had been subjected to a thermal shock loading which induces microcracking in the matrix. A semi-empirical equation for the variation of the internal friction with microcrack evolution was derived using the experimental results and a model available in the literature for the elastic constants of a microcracked composite. The derived equation predicts a continuous increase of the internal friction with increasing number of microcracks.
