A new method is proposed to determine the longitudinal and transversal sound velocity in porous ceramic materials. The model is based on a known relation between the young's modulus and the porosity assuming spheroidal pore geometry and a relative constant Poisson's ratio of porous materials. A strong effect of pore shape on the ultrasonic velocity-porosity correlation is proved. The proposed method enables the possibility for nondestructive evaluation of the pore morphology in sintered materials.
