Mr Alan Farthing MD FRCOG was made an honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College when he was appointed as a Consultant Gynaecologist at St Marys Hospital in 1997.
He is a specialist in gynaecological cancer care and an internationally recognised expert in the use of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery.
His MD thesis investigated the role of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) and p53 in the development of cervical cancer. Following this he spent time in Australia learning new techniques in minimal access surgery and undergoing specialist training in gynaecological oncology.
Mr Farthing has established teaching programmes in the use of laparoscopic and hysteroscopic surgery and is actively involved in developing teaching simulators for use in the training of junior surgeons.
He has written a definitive review of fertility sparing treatments in patients with gynaecological malignancy and along with colleagues at the West London Gynaecological Cancer Centre is pionering these techniques.
He is the lead of the West London Endometriosis Centre and is working to develop national centres that are recognised for the research and treatment of this debilitating condition in conjunction with the British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy.
He is a member of the Imperial College Student Advisory Board.
Having been originally appointed as a consultant at St Marys he now has a joint appointment also working on the Queen Charlottes site at Hammersmith Hospital.
