Hi-tech industries present specific challenges and opportunities to managers and strategists. This module, which builds on your core module in strategy, aims to help students formulate and implement business strategy in hi-tech industries. The module should be of particular interest to participants interested in managing a business in hi-tech, or a business in which technology matters, and to those interested in consulting or venture capital.
Module Aims & Objectives
The module aims to clarify how to create value and how to capture value in hi-tech industries. It will explain the interaction between technological change, market dynamics, competition, and the evolution of demand. It will cover the topics of technological change affects markets, the industry life-cycle, how to profit from innovation, how to organize for innovation, open innovation, and platforms for innovation.
Particular attention will be paid to industries where standards and platforms affect industry dynamics. Teaching Methods: will use a combination of lectures, independent readings and cases. The independent reading will provide participants the opportunity to study classic articles and essential ideas. The cases cover classic hi-tech cases such as EMI and the CT Scanner, as well as very recent companies challenges, such as Kodak and the Digital Revolution.
