Summary

Spacecraft Propulsion S5 - AERO7XXXX /9XXXX

Aims

Through this module you will become familiar with the fundamental concepts and practical engineering theory related to propulsion systems for spacecraft.  Both chemical and electrical thruster technologies will be discussed.  This will include an overview of plasma physics relevant to electric propulsion devices.  Additionally, essential astrodynamics concepts including orbital transfers, plane change, low thrust manoeuvres will be reviewed.

Role

Course Leader

Spacecraft Systems  - MSc AERO70019

Aims

This module presents an industry standard methodology for spacecraft systems analysis and design. The main concepts covered in this course include the mission objectives: requirements analysis, political and regulatory constraints and financial considerations; the system as a whole: the launch vehicle/launch environment, spacecraft platform and ground segment; and the subsystem requirements: thermal, structure, power, electronics, communications and attitude control.

Role

Course Leader

Spacecraft Structures S4 - MSc AERO70018

Aims

This module presents state-of-the-art methodologies for the design of spacecraft structures, from launchers to satellite platforms and to habitable inflatable modules. The fundamental knowledge provided in this course will involve how hazardous spacecraft-environment interactions can be predicted and mitigated at material and structural level; awareness of design methods and certification requirements for both structures and payloads that can successfully withstand launch and insertion into orbit; and the understanding of the operational principles for deployable structures in space applications and of the relevant design strategies.

Role

Lecturer

Emerging Technology for Green Aviation - MSc AERO70031

Aims

The aim is to introduce the key technological advances, and the corresponding underlying principles, for a greener aviation. This includes the potential advantages of alternative configurations, flow control and drag-reduction using both active and passive systems, load alleviation systems and structural weight-reduction strategies and aircraft end of life and recycling. The module will consist of timetabled lectures and tutorials, delivered by academics with the relevant research expertise.
