Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm, a powerfuloff-line batch training method for neural networks, is adaptedhere for online estimation of power system dynamic behavior.A special form of neural network compatible with the feedbacklinearization framework is used to enable non-linear self-tuningcontrol. Use of LM is shown to yield better closed-loop performancecompared to conventional recursive least square (RLS) approach. For successive disturbance use of LM in conjunction withnon-linear neural network structure yields faster convergencecompared to RLS. A case study on a test system demonstratesthe effectiveness of the online LM method for both linear andnonlinear estimation over RLS estimation (linear).

The paper describes the implementation of a centralised control-design scheme in a real-time laboratory-based dynamic simulator. A centralised multivariable-control algorithm is designed employing remote feedback signals considering delay in signal transmission. The transmitted signals can be used for multiple-swing-mode damping using a single controller. Such an algorithm is numerically intensive owing to the high controller size and the predictor that takes care of the delay in signal transmission. The performance of the proposed controller is demonstrated by practical implementation using a rapid-prototyping controller mounted on a PC-ATX. Results of the experimental tests are shown for a detailed model of the power system implemented using Linux PC-based multiprocessor technology.

Application of the normalised R., loop-shaping technique for design and simplification of damping controllers in the LMI framework is illustrated. A linearised model of the power system is pre- and post-compensated using the loop-shaping approach. The problem of robust stabilisation of a normalised coprime factor plant description is translated to a generalised H-infinity problem. The solution is sought numerically using LMIs with additional pole-placement constraints. This ensures that the time-domain specifications are met besides robust stabilisation.
