Methods intended for use in the design of steel and composite building frames covering the provision of adequate robustness so as to guard against progressive collapse are in the process of moving from prescriptive to quantitative. An approach that recognises all the important complex physical phenomena, employs a realistic criterion of failure and is capable of being implemented at a variety of levels has been devised at Imperial College London. Recent further development of this method has streamlined the necessary analyses, thereby making it possible to conduct parametric studies that provide insights into the link between changes to the structure and quantitative measures of resistance to progressive collapse. This approach is used herein to examine a number of different arrangements, from which key features of behaviour are identified. It has therefore been possible to isolate those structural modifications with the greatest potential for improving robustness and, moreover, to associate quantitative measures of that improvement with each scheme. Results for a series of arrangements, including several proposals put forward by Industry as methods of improving robustness based on the simple notion of increased tying capacity, are examined herein and general principles for improvement identified.

This paper presents domain decomposition methods for nonlinear analysis of soil-structure interaction problems, where particular emphasis is given to Dirichlet-Neumann iterative coupling methods. In this approach, the overall soil-structure domain is physically decomposed into independently modelled soil and structure sub-domains, and then the response of separately modelled sub-domains is coupled by successive updates of the boundary conditions, ensuring convergence to equilibrium and compatibility at the interface of the soil-structure coupled system. In this respect, the mathematical and computational characteristics of using constant relaxation, adaptive relaxation and condensed stiffness matrix of the partitioned sub-domains in coupling algorithms are discussed, including the convergence conditions and choice of algorithmic parameters. In view of the above, the use of a modified reduced order method, which utilises an efficient approximation of the condensed stiffness matrices at the soil-structure interface to ensure and accelerate convergence, is discussed and its merits are illustrated in a case study. © 2009 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Li ZX, Izzuddin BA, Vu-Quoc L, 2008, A 9-node co-rotational quadrilateral shell element, Computational Mechanics, Vol: 42, Pages: 873-884

A new 9-node co-rotational curved quadrilateral shell element formulation is presented in this paper.Different from other existing co-rotational element formulations: (1) Additive rotational nodal variables are utilized in the present formulation, they are two well-chosen components of the mid-surface normal vector at each node, and are additive in an incremental solution procedure; (2) the internal force vector and the element tangent stiffness matrix are respectively the first derivative and the second derivative of the element strain energy with respect to the nodal variables, furthermore, all nodal variables are commutative in calculating the second derivatives, resulting in symmetric element tangent stiffness matrices in the local and global coordinate systems; (3) the element tangent stiffness matrix is updated using the total values of the nodal variables in an incremental solution procedure, making it advantageous for solving dynamic problems. Finally, several examples are solved to verify the reliability and computational efficiency of the proposed element formulation.
