Aims

This course is designed to help students:

- Explain the behaviour and properties of fluids (static and dynamic)

- Solve problems involving Newtonian incompressible fluids using 1-D mass, momentum and energy balances

- Apply these basic principles in flow measurements

- Solve pipeline problems

- Solve simple 1-D problems in compressible flow

 

This is a first course in transport phenomena, and introduces both heat and mass transport. The emphasis of the course is a first principles approach to understanding transport phenomena. A number of applications, both traditional and contemporary, are presented throughout the course.

Heat and Mass Transport is given equal importance and parallels and contrast between the two are discussed at every stage. The focus of this course will be on conduction, diffusion and convective heat and mass transport.
