Colin Bicknell trained at Southampton and Imperial where he was awarded Bachelor of Medicine and Doctor of Medicine degrees.
He is a Clinical Reader in the Department of Surgery and Cancer, Imperial College London. He was appointed as Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Imperial Vascular Unit, London in 2009 and is presently Head of Specialty for Vascular Surgery.
He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and a member of the Vascular Surgical Society of Great Britain and Ireland, the British Society of Endovascular Therapy, the Royal Society of Medicine and the European Society of Vascular Surgery.
Clinically, Colin Bicknell is a practicing vascular surgeon undertaking the full range of surgical procedures, with expertise in aortic treatments.
He is a board member of the Section of surgery council and the Educational Reference Group at the Royal Society of Medicine. He was the Chair of the British Society of Endovascular Therapy Annual Conference Committee from 2013-17.
He is the Course Director of the Imperial Health Policy MSc and has worked with the Department of Health to define the structure and role of the NHS National leadership Council.
Colin Bicknell is a member of the Vascular Society of Great Britain and Ireland Research Committee and the co-chair of the Aortic Special Interest Research Group.
Research interests include examination of methods to reduce error in vascular surgery procedures. He was Chief Investigator of a multicenter study to examine the Landscape of Error in Aortic Procedures (the LEAP study). This led to the initiation of a unique team training programme at Imperial and other centres.
He has notably studied the application of novel technologies in the aorta, such as the advantages of robotic endovascular catheters in the vascular tree, which has led to the world’s first trials of vascular robotics in man.
Colin Bicknell is an investigator in a number of clinical research trials including the IDEAS trial, examining the effect of incentives to encourage attendance at diabetic eye screening appointments, the AADRVARK trial, investigating the role of ACE inhibitors to slow small aneurysm growth rates, the 15-year follow up of the EVAR trials and currently is an investigator in the UK COMPASS study (a study to assess the optimum methods to repair juxtarenal aneurysms) and the BSET CLEVAR study (to assess the effectiveness of a novel aortic graft to treat abdominal aortic aneurysms).
