Fairbrass SA, Williams DR, 2001, Laser surface profilometry: A novel technique for the examination of polymer surfaces, ACS Symposium Series, Vol: 779, Pages: 202-211, ISSN: 0097-6156
Laser Surface Profilometry is a non-destructive technique that requires little or no sample preparation and takes place in ambient laboratory conditions. Samples of poly(vinyl chloride) were artificially aged by exposing them to high levels of ultra violet light. A near infrared laser was used to produce topographical images of the changes in surface morphology, both on ageing and after simple conservation cleaning techniques. Cumulative percentage graphs of Ra data were shown to be a sensitive indication of any changes, which had taken place. The percentage of reflected laser light was also collected and maps of surface chemical changes were produced. This technique has proved to be a valuable tool for the examination of museum objects.

The glass transition temperature (Tg) is an important property for the characterisation of polymeric, food, pharmaceutical and many natural products. IGC can provide a fast and accurate determination of this property as well as its dependence on relative humidity. This paper describes the characterisation of maltose with n-decane at infinite dilution.

Thielmann F, Butler DA, Williams DR, et al., 2000, Characterisation of microporous materials by dynamic sorption methods, Studies in Surface Science and Catalysis, Vol: 129, Pages: 633-638, ISSN: 0167-2991
Finite concentration IGC is a useful tool to investigate surface and pore properties. A novel combination of finite concentration IGC and thermal desorption provides the possibility to separate micropore adsorption from surface and mesopore adsorption. This allows the calculation of BET values with physical relevance for highly microporous materials and the consideration of molecular sieve effects. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
Levoguer C, Butler D, Thielmann F, et al., 2000, Characterizing the physico-chemical properties of pharmaceutical materials, Pharmaceutical Technology Europe, Vol: 12, ISSN: 0164-6826
Inverse gas chromatography (IGC) is a gas phase technique, first developed more than 40 years ago to study the surface and bulk properties of particulate and fibrous materials. In response to a demand for increased reliability and flexibility when performing IGC experiments, the first commercially available IGC instrument has recently been introduced. This article gives a brief description of the technique and provides some examples of its application in physico-chemical analysis of pharmaceuticals.

Levoguer CL, Williams DR, 1998, Determining permeability and diffusion rates in polymer films and packaging materials., Med Device Technol, Vol: 9, Pages: 14-18, ISSN: 1048-6690
This article describes a rapid and effective means of calculating diffusion and permeability constants for a range of polymer films and packaging materials with various vapours. The sealed diffusion-cell method, in combination with a high performance DVS-1 gravimetric analysis system, provides fundamental data for thin films and rapid screening of composite films when designing advanced packaging systems or calculating potential shelf-life of packaged devices.
