AB - Since the beginning of medicine, optical imaging has formed a central pillar for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. The 20th century saw the development of many other diagnostic imaging methods - CT, MRI, nuclear methods, etc. - but optical imaging remains of paramount importance. The minimally invasive surgery revolution has been enabled by the detection of the surgical field with a color camera system that is either mounted on the proximal end of an endoscope or in more recent times miniaturized and placed at the tip. The color responses of the red-green-blue image data are well matched to the human eye and can be presented on a color display to the surgeon in the operating theater for direct visual guidance of the intervention. However, while this provides a visually recognizable picture of the tissue to the surgeon, it misses the potential of light to reveal otherwise invisible tissue information. Within the last few decades alternative optical imaging methods have started to become more widely used and it is the potential of biophotonics techniques to guide interventions that will be explored in this chapter. Descriptions will be provided to explain how these additional signals may be collected, understood, and applied to different diseases.
