A computational model is presented of interlayer deformation in van der Waals structures, in order to investigate the fracture mechanisms of these materials. A parameterization scheme equipped to handle large numbers of layers is used. Despite the low energetic cost of slip, a form of plasticity, results show a tendency towards brittle fracture. Allowing bending in layers, to form and propagate a crack, is shown to be an energetically favorable path for relieving strain.
