Flavia De Simone is a Research Associate/Benchmarking Manager of the Transport Strategy Centre (TSC) at the Centre for Transport Studies within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Imperial College London. Since joining TSC in June 2016, she has been involved in different metro and railway benchmarking projects, being part of groups such as the Community of Metros (CoMET) and the Nova Group of Metros, ISBeRG - the International Suburban Rail Benchmarking Group, IBBG - International Bus Benchmarking Group and Airport Benchmarking Group.
Flavia is co-managing ISBeRG - the International Suburban Rail Benchmarking Group. She is also giving support to the management of the Airport Benchmarking Group.
Flavia has considerable experience working in monitoring and management of transport systems, road safety, urban freight transport, transportation modelling and simulation. She has led projects on the development of regional and urban road safety systems and was involved in international projects focused on the safety of vulnerable users.
In April 2016 Flavia received her Ph.D. degree in Transportation Engineering from “La Sapienza” University, Rome in collaboration with the Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) at North Carolina State University, Raleigh, USA. Her PhD thesis concerns the development of an innovative real-time crash risk forecast system for an urban network, supported by traffic simulation and short-term forecast models. Her last work experience at Transport Simulation Systems (TSS), Barcelona, Spain, enabled her to go more in depth into transport simulation and real time traffic forecast, participating in projects concerning hybrid simulation and real time traffic forecast.
