Summary

Dr Geoff Fowler is a Senior Research Fellow and the Laboratory Manager for the Environmental and Water Resources Engineering section.

He completed his PhD at Imperial College in 1993, titled "The thermal conversion of contaminated soils in carbonaceous adsorbents".

His research experience and publications encompasses the wider waste and resources field including: the fundamental chemistry of waste-binder interactions in stabilisation-solidification systems technologies; contaminated soil remediation, leaching and the analysis of organic compounds from plastic materials; activated carbon production, testing, surface modification and regeneration; faecal sludge and sewage sludge treatment and valorisation; waste tyre disassembly buy Ultra High pressure Water; Recovered carbon black production and reuse from end of life tyres; carbon capture and storage.

He is a leading expert in the evaluation and application of both thermal and microwave pyrolysis, carbonisation and gasification systems for processing waste carbon-based materials.  His research work has particular focus on recovery of carbon and its reuse, and has built several laboratory-pilot-scale systems.

Geoff is a Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and a Chartered Chemist, and is the Chairman of the British Carbon Group, chairing the organising committee of the World Carbon Conference "Carbon'22".

He is a senior trustee of the Society of Chemical Industry and is the youngest recipient of its prestigious "Lampitt Medal".
