The rough hard-sphere model of molecular interactions is employed to evaluate the second-order corrections to the Wang Chang-Uhlenbeck expressions for the transport properties of a polyatomic gas. For shear viscosity and thermal conductivity the corrections depend only weakly on the parameters of the rough hard-sphere model. The corrections devised are used, in conjunction with accurate experimental data, to investigate the relationship between the transport properties of a polyatomic gas predicted by the kinetic theory. It is found that the experiment and theory can be reconciled only if one transport coefficient peculiar to polyatomic gases differs substantially from the values given by the most recent approximate treatments of the dynamics of binary collisions of polyatomic molecules.
