CHARALAMBIDES MN, WILLIAMS JG, 1995, Fracture toughness characterization of phenolic resin and its composite, Symposium on Use of Plastics and Plastic Composites - Materials and Mechanics Issues, at the ASME Winter Annual Meeting, Pages: 17-28

The aim of this study is to determine the fracture toughness of phenolic resin and its composite. Fracture tests on phenolic resin resulted in a fracture toughness close to values quoted for unmodified epoxy resins. Composite specimens of glass fiber reinforced phenolic were also tested. The interlaminar fracture toughness in both mode I and mode II failures was determined. The mode I initiation values were lower than the neat resin's toughness. Mode I propagation values were strongly influenced by fiber bridging. The mechanism of fiber bridging was found to be sensitive to specimen dimensions. The effect of fiber bridging on the mode I analysis is discussed. Fiber bridging was also evident in mode II failures. Two different geometries were used for the mode II tests (end loaded split and end notched flexure); a correlation between the results from the two geometries is made.

DIOH NN, IVANKOVIC A, LEEVERS PS, WILLIAMS JGet al., 1994, The high strain rate behaviour of polymers, International Conference on Mechanical and Physical Behaviour of Materials under Dynamic Loading (EURODYMAT 94), Pages: 119-124

Experimental results are presented for the strain rate sensitivity of polycarbonate in the strain rate range 10(-4) to 10(4)s(-1), at 23 degrees C. The high strain rate tests are performed in a split Hopkinson pressure bar. Using thick specimens, there is an apparent increase in strain rate sensitivity in the high strain rate regime. This observed increase is significantly reduced when thinner specimens are employed suggesting that it does not represent inherent material behaviour. Numerical and analytical evidence is presented which shows that the apparent increase at high strain rates can be accounted for by stress wave propagation effects present in the test when high impact velocities are employed. The assumption of uniform stress and strain distribution within a split Hopkinson pressure bar specimen is therefore inappropriate at high impact velocities.
