Meager I, Ashraf RS, Mollinger S, et al., 2013, Photocurrent enhancement from diketopyrrolopyrrole polymer solar cells through alkyl-chain branching point manipulation., J Am Chem Soc, Vol: 135, Pages: 11537-11540
Systematically moving the alkyl-chain branching position away from the polymer backbone afforded two new thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPPTT-T) polymers. When used as donor materials in polymer:fullerene solar cells, efficiencies exceeding 7% were achieved without the use of processing additives. The effect of the position of the alkyl-chain branching point on the thin-film morphology was investigated using X-ray scattering techniques and the effects on the photovoltaic and charge-transport properties were also studied. For both solar cell and transistor devices, moving the branching point further from the backbone was beneficial. This is the first time that this effect has been shown to improve solar cell performance. Strong evidence is presented for changes in microstructure across the series, which is most likely the cause for the photocurrent enhancement.

Tsoi WC, Zhang W, Hollis JR, et al., 2013, In-situ monitoring of molecular vibrations of two organic semiconductors in photovoltaic blends and their impact on thin film morphology, Applied Physics Letters, Vol: 102, ISSN: 1077-3118
We report in-situ simultaneous monitoring of molecular vibrations of two components in organic photovoltaic blends using resonant Raman spectroscopy. Blend films were composed of a low bandgap copolymer thieno[3,2-b]thiophene-diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPPTTT) and (6,6)-phenyl-C71-butyric acid ester (PC 70BM). Changes in Raman spectra associated with crystallization processes of each component and their impact on thin film morphology were studied during thermal annealing and cooling processes. Transition temperatures to crystalline phases in blends were measured at ∼150 °C and ∼170 °C for DPPTTT and PC 70BM, respectively. Such phase changes lead to modifications in local chemical composition reducing relative Raman peak intensities (IPC70BM/IDPPTTT) from ∼0.4 in PC 70BM-rich domains to ∼0.15 in homogeneous areas.

Medeiros MCR, Martinez-Domingo C, Ramon E, et al., 2013, Inkjet-printed organic electronics: Operational stability and reliability issues, Pages: 1-10, ISSN: 1938-5862
The operational stability of all-inkjet printed transistors is reported. At room temperature the threshold voltage shifts following a stretched exponential with a relaxation time τ=1×103 s. Two distinct trap sites active in different temperature ranges, one at 200-250 K and other above 310 K cause the electrical instability. Both types of traps capture holes and can be fast neutralized by photogenerated electrons. Optically induced detrapping currents confirm the differences in trap signature. It is proposed, that the traps have a common physical origin related to water. © The Electrochemical Society.

The photostability of two donor polymers, DPP-TT-T and PTB7, is compared in neat films and blend films with PC71BM. In both neat and blend films, PTB7 is shown to be relatively unstable. This observation is shown to correlate with transient optical studies of long lived polymer triplets and with molecular probe studies of singlet oxygen yields.

Thieno[3,2-b]thienobis(silolothiophene), a new electron rich hexacyclic monomer has been synthesized and incorporated into three novel donor-acceptor low-bandgap polymers. By carefully choosing the acceptor co-monomer, the energy levels of the polymers could be modulated and high power conversion efficiencies of 5.52% were reached in OPV devices.
