A modification of special relativity was proposed in which a physical energy joins the speed of light as an invariant. A nonlinear modification of the action of the Lorentz group on momentum space accomplished this, which was generated by adding a dilatation to each boost in such a way that the Planck energy remained invariant. The associated algebra had unmodified structure constants. The resulting modifications of field theory were also discussed and a modification of the equivalence principle which determines how the new theory was associated with general relativity was suggested.

Sandvik HB, Barrow JD, Magueijo J, 2002, A simple cosmology with a varying fine structure constant, Physical Review Letters, Vol: 88, ISSN: 0031-9007

A cosmological generalization of Bekenstein's theory of a varying was used to naturally explain the reported variations in the fine structure constant while satisfying all other observational bounds. The onset of Λ was shown to be closely related to the cosmic epoch when significant changes in α cease to occur. Numerical results show that with a natural coupling, and using observational constraints on the nature of the cold dark matter, α changes significantly only in the matter dominated epoch.
