Ross GW, Jeffrey PM, Eason RW, Damzen MJ, Ramos-Garcia R, Troth R, Garrett MH, Rytz Det al., 1994, Shallow trap modelling of infrared sensitive BaTiO<inf>3</inf>, Pages: 362-363

The model illustrated herein assumes that the photoexcitation coefficient for both deep and shallow traps is wavelength-dependent. Numerical modelling of the shallow trap rate equations has allowed various parameters to be derived from the experimental points measured at infrared, red, and blue wavelengths.

Barry N, Duffault J, Troth R, Ramos-Garcia R, Damzen MJet al., 1994, Comparison between continuous-wave and pulsed photorefraction in barium titanate

This paper presents a numerical analysis regarding the the full transient behavior of continuous-wave and repetitively pulse illumination in BaTiO3 crystal model. As a result, the model was able to provide good agreement across a wide range of low-intensity experimental measurements and also at high intensity MW/cm2 pulse-writing intensity.

Damzen MJ, Green RPM, Crofts GJ, 1994, High-energy, single-longitudinal-mode solid-state oscillators using gain-gratings

The paper presents the experimental results of a laser resonator design that uses 3-D volume gain gratings formed by spatial hole burning and initiated by spontaneous cavity emission. The induced gain-gratings can be considered dynamic holographic elements with diffractive properties that provide both spectral and spatial mode control of a high-gain flashlamp-pumped Nd:YAG laser system. The dynamic parametric growth of the grating initiated from amplified spontaneous emission in the cavity produces a self Q-switching resulting in short pulse formation.

Damzen MJ, 1994, Gain media phase conjugators and self-adaptive solid-state lasers

Recent findings were presented concerning three-dimensional saturable gain-gratings, rendered by spatial hole-burning, as effective, externally programmable and/or self-adaptive diffractive optical elements for utility in gain-media phase conjugators as a technology for flexible adaptive spatial, spectral, and Q-switching control of high-gain solid-state lasers. Characterization was to be provided chiefly of gain-gratings written by spatial hole-burning when coherent beams, at the lasing wavelength, interfere in a gain medium. Writing and reading of gain gratings, four-wave mixing in a saturable medium, self-pumped phase conjugation and self-adaptive solid-state oscillators were briefly enumerated and discussed.

Green RPM, Crofts GJ, Syed K, Damzen MJet al., 1994, Self-pumped phase conjugation in a solid-state gain medium, Pages: 227-228

Self-pump phase conjugation using a nonlinear-material in a self-intersecting loop geometry is particularly attractive for its simplicity and efficiency. A few investigations have been made of gain-media in loop geometry. This paper presents the results of investigation of the spatial, temporal, and energy characteristics of the solid-state gain medium Nd:YAG in loop configuration.

Troth RC, Ramos-Garcia R, Damzen MJ, 1994, Single pulse phase conjugation by self-pumped four-wave mixing in BaTiO<inf>3</inf>

This is a physical explanation of the unreported feature termed as 'self-pumped four-wave mixing' in a single crystal of BaTiO3 through comparison of experimental results generated from a train of nanosecond pulses exhibiting a steady-state photorefractive four-wave mixing theory. This explanation is used to optimize a self pumped four-wave mixing geometry in order to produce the phase conjugate of a single pulse.

We demonstrate, for the first time to our knowledge, a self-starting stimulated-Brillouin-scattering phaseconjugate resonator in a flash-lamp-pumped dye-laser system. The brightness of the laser is increased by a factor of 40 compared with that of an equivalent plane-]plane conventional resonator.

We report the operation of Nd:YAG ring laser resonators formed by diffractive coupling from a gain volume hologram written in a Nd:YAG amplifier. Stable diffraction-limited output in a TEM(00) mode is demonstrated in a Nd:YAG system with thermal lensing and without the requirement of spatial mode control.

Damzen MJ, Green RPM, Crofts GJ, 1994, Analysis of a laser amplifier in a self-conjugating loop geometry, Pages: 101-102

Few research was made on the application of gain saturation in a laser amplifier as the nonlinear loop medium in self-pumped phase conjugators. In this study, the competence and features of the gain loop conjugator device. A model of nonlinear interaction equations with unrestricted saturation degree was incorporated. This enabled calculation of the intensity-dependent reflectivity of the loop conjugator.

Green RPM, Crofts GJ, Damzen MJ, 1994, Single-mode unidirectional holographic Nd:YAG ring resonator, Pages: 409-410

Volume gain-grating holograms formed by gain grating in a laser amplifier tends to produce self adaptive laser systems. The spatial form of the oscillating cavity mode of these lasers are controlled by the gain holographic element. The paper presents results of the energy, spatial and temporal characteristics of a self adaptive Nd:YAG laser with a unidirectional holographic ring resonator.

Crofts GJ, Green RPM, Damzen MJ, 1994, Adaptive gain-holography in solid-state laser resonators, Pages: 9-10

This paper reports on the feasibility of phase-conjugation by four-wave mixing in saturable amplifying media and the use of gain gratings as efficient diffractive optical elements. Results show the feasibility of using gain gratings as dynamic holographic elements to couple together optical amplifiers and to construct self-correcting loop resonators.
