This paper presents a number of models whose aim is to establish a computational basis for the hypothesis that conscious information processing in the brain is mediated by a mechanism of global broadcast. A possible role for this putative "global neuronal workspace" in achieving cognitive integration is mooted in the context of modular theories of mind, and an argument is advanced for its likely emergence within the sort of small-world brain network seemingly favoured by evolution. The paper concludes with some speculation on the relationship between life and consciousness as it could be. © 2007 alifexi.org.

It has been hypothesised that a global neuronal workspace underlies the brain's capacity to process information consciously. This paper describes a significant variation on a previously reported computer simulation of such a global neuronal workspace, in which competition and broadcast were realised through reverberating populations of spiking neurons. In the present model, unlike the previous one, the wiring of the workspace is not predefined but constructed in a stochastic fashion on the fly, which is far more biologically plausible. We demonstrate that the new model exhibits the same capacity for broadcast and competition as the previous one. We conclude with a short discussion of a brain-inspired cognitive architecture that incorporates a global workspace of the sort described.

This paper offers a preliminary sketch for an account of reflexive consciousness based on an implemented architecture that combines a global workspace architecture with an internally closed sensorimotor loop. The proposed account extends the theoretical framework of the already implemented architecture with to two concepts that structure the flow of consciously processed information. First, contextual switches divide the unfolding contents of consciousness into a set of nested episodes, wherein one conscious episode can "refer to" another. Second, the imposition of a focus / fringe structure enables consciousness to encompass material that is merely available to it but not actually present. This combination of reflexivity and fringe may underpin our awareness of our own existence as conscious beings.

This paper proposes a brain-inspired cognitive architecture that incorporates approximations to the concepts of consciousness, emotion, and imagination. To emulate the empirically established cognitive efficacy of conscious as opposed to unconscious information processing in the mammalian brain, the architecture adopts a model of information flow from global workspace theory. Cognitive functions such as anticipation and planning are realised through internal simulation of interaction with the environment. Action selection, in both actual and internally simulated interaction with the environment, is mediated by affect. An implementation of the architecture is described which is based on weightless neurons and is used to control a simulated robot.
