Mike Benson is a Research Associate of the Transport Strategy Centre (TSC) within the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London. Since joining the TSC in 2017, Mike has been involved in railway, metro and bus benchmarking projects.
Mike has led a number of studies for the International Mainline Rail Benchmarking Group, including ‘Management of Passenger Capacity on Trains’, ‘Demand Forecasting and Timetable Simulation’, ‘Punctuality’ and ‘Rolling Stock Delivery for Service’. He also has experience of the development and analysis of the Key Performance Indicator system. Mike has also worked on a number of studies for the International Suburban Rail Benchmarking Group, including ‘Passenger Flow Management’, ‘New Signalling Systems’ and ‘Real-Time Passenger Information and Communications Technology’.
Prior to joining the TSC, Mike worked in consulting as a transport planner for Systra and Mouchel, He also spent time on secondment to the National Transport Authority in Dublin and worked for the National Transit Institute in the United States.
Mike has a Master’s degree in City and Regional Planning, with a concentration in transportation, from the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey (USA). While studying, he was awarded the Jerome C Premo scholarship from the American Public Transport Foundation.
