Newlands C, Olver A, Brandon N, 2003, Gaseous evolution of hydrogen from hydrocarbon oil and grease lubricated contacts, Pages: 719-726, ISSN: 0167-8922

The level of hydrogen surrounding lubricated rubbing contacts has been investigated using mass spectral analysis. Two mineral oils of differing viscosity grades (SAE 10 and 40) and three grease base stocks have been investigated. The tests were carried out using a modified rolling four-ball tester operating under extreme pressure conditions. The effect of test temperature was investigated by introducing heating. The resulting levels of hydrogen have been compared with the test parameters and the factors important for gaseous evolution of hydrogen are discussed.
