Luckham P, 2011, Spoay yourself dressed, Chemical Engineer, Pages: 37-39, ISSN: 0302-0797

Researchers from the chemical engineering department of Imperial College, London, UK and artists from the Royal College of Art worked jointly to demonstrate the way dresses were created from spraying. The technology was developed on the basis the polymer formed from the formulation of fibers and polymer had the potential to bind like a fabric. The team used an artist's airbrush to conduct the study and form the fabric from spraying without worrying about an aerosol can. This worked well and the researchers and artists were able to produce small volumes of fabric. The next stage of the study involved putting the materials into an aerosol can so that it was sold as a product rather than a technology, which was to be used in a factory. The team initially tried simply pressurizing the can with compressed air, but discovered that the pressure in the can reduced along with the quality of the product changes with time, as the material was sprayed.

Suraya AR, Luckham PF, Lawrence CJ, 2008, Shear thinning and frequency dependent behaviour of adsorbed polymer layers Part II.Three layer flow model, Pages: 65-72

A novel hydrodynamic model called the three-layer flow (TLF) model has been developed to enable the quantification of viscoelastic properties of adsorbed polymer layers obtained from nanorheological experiments. By comparing the qualitative experimental data to the TLF Model, four specific parameters could be quantified from the best fit curve; these are the apparent thickness of the adsorbed layer, the real and imaginary components of the layer viscosity, and the apparent solvent viscosity. It was found that the comparison between experimental data and the TLF Model showed excellent agreement for separation distances larger than the overlap region. Furthermore, by comparing the TLF Model with experimental data at different frequencies, an apparent link was found between the complex modulus cross-over point and the adsorbed layer thickness. For adsorbed hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) layers, the cross-over point occurred when the surface separation distance was approximately equal to the thickness of a single adsorbed layer, indicating a relatively viscous nature. Finally, a direct comparison between nanorheological data with standard rheometry measurements also provided some indication of the reliability of the model. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V.
