  • 1971 Graduated from South Pasadena High School, California, USA as AFS exchange student 
  • 1972 Graduated from Liceo Classico "Virgilio" in Mantua, Italy (Maturità Classica) 
  • 1972 Enrolled at the University of Modena School of Medicine, Italy 
  • 1975-78 Intern in the department of Experimental Pathology of the University of  Modena, Italy 
  • 1978 Graduated with 110/110 at the University of Modena School of Medicine, Italy          
  • 1978 Clinical Fellowship at Lutheran Medical Center, New York, USA through a scholarship issued by the Italo-American Medical Foundation 
  • 1979 Clinical Officer in the Department of Medicine , Mantua Hospital, Italy  
  • 1980-81 Served in the army as Medical Officer in Verona; at the same time attended the Department of Anatomic Pathology of the University of Verona, Italy 
  • 1981 Staff Pathologist (Assistente Medico) in the Department of Anatomic
  • Pathology,Mantua General Hospital, Italy (35.000 cytologic specimens mostly gynecologic, 22.000 histologic specimens per year) 
  • 1983         MRCPath equivalent (Diploma di Specialista in Anatomia Patologica e Citodiagnostica – mark 70/70), University of Bologna, Italy, with a thesis on Hyperplastic Polyps of the colon
  •  1984         Three months stage at the Department of Cytology, Institut Curie, Paris,(Dir. Dr. A. Zajdela) in order to learn fine needle aspiration of superficial and deep organs and exfoliative cytology of the respiratory tract 
  • 1985         Is appointed Consultant (Aiuto Corresponsabile) and organizes the FNAC clinic in the Department of Anatomic Pathology of Mantua General Hospital (approx. 2000 specimens/year)  
  • 1988   Three months stage at the Department of Cytopathology, Karolinska   Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, to study cytology of the salivary gland, thyroid  and lymphnodes 
  • 1989 Becomes Member of the International Academy of Cytology (MIAC) 
  • 1990 Consultant (Aiuto Corresponsabile) at the Institute of Anatomic Pathology, University of Bologna, Bellaria Hospital, Bologna, Italy 
  • 1990 October; attends the International Tutorial of Clinical Cytology organized by the International Academy of Cytology, Vienna 
  • 1991 - 99 :Honorary Professor of Cytopathology (Professore a contratto) of the University of  Bologna School of Medicine, where he teaches gynecologic cytology, respiratory and urological cytology and fine needle aspiration cytology to postgraduate medical students  
  • 1992 Is awarded the certificate of aptitude in Gynaecological Cytopathology by the European Community Training Project on Cervical Cancer Screening (Director: Prof. D. Coleman) 
  • 1992 Is appointed Head of Gynecological Cytology (Aiuto, Responsabile del Modulo di citologia ginecologica), Bellaria Hospital, Bologna, Italy 
  • 1992    Stage as Honorary Consultant at the Department of Lung Pathology, Royal   Brompton Hospital, London, UK, under the supervision of Prof. B. Corrin, where he studies interstitial lung diseases 
  • 1993 Elected  Vice President of the Italian Society of Cytology (Associazione Italiana di Citologia)  
  • 1994 Elected National Chairman of the Italian Union of Anatomic Pathologists (Sindacato Nazionale Anatomo Patologi) 
  • 1995    Member of the Regional Oncology Committee (Commissione Oncologica della Regione Emilia Romagna) with the task of organizing the screening programme for the detection of cervical cancer in the metropolitan area of Bologna 
  • 1997       Appointed Head of Cytopathology (Responsabile Modulo di Citopatologia)- Istituto di Anatomia,Istologia e Citologia  Patologica - Ospedale Bellaria - Bologna) 
  • 1998       Elected in the National Board of the Italian Society of Anatomic Pathology and Cytopathology 
  • 1999       Appointed Consultant Cytopathologist/Histopathologist at the Dept. of Histopathology of Hammersmith Hospital, Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College School of Medicine and Coordinator of the MSc Course in Clinical Cytology 
  • 2000       Trust Hospital Coordinator of the NHSCSP and Educational Supervisor for North Thames Deanery; Lead Pathologist in Gynaecologic Oncology and Lung Pathology (the latter until 2004) 
  • 2001       Organizer of the Hammersmith Advanced Histopathology Courses 
  • 2002       Deputy Chief of Service, Department of Histopathology, Hammersmith  
  • 2005        West London Cervical Screening Network Co-ordinator (until 2007)
