The preliminary Multidisciplinary Design and Optimisation (MDO) of a flexible wing aerofoil apropos a small Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) is performed using a multifidelity model-based strategy. Both the passively adaptive structure and the shape of the flexible wing aerofoil are optimised for best aerodynamic performance under aero-structural constraints, within a coupled aeroelastic formulation. A typical flight mission for surveillance purposes is considered and includes the potential occurrence of wind gusts. A metamodel for the high-fidelity objective function and each of the constraints is built, based on a tuned low-fidelity one, in order to improve the efficiency of the optimisation process. Both metamodels are based on solutions of the aeroelastic equations for a flexible aerofoil but employ different levels of complexity and computational cost for modelling aerodynamics and structural dynamics within a modal approach. The high-fidelity model employs nonlinear Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) coupled with a full set of prescribed structural modes, whereas the low-fidelity one employs linear thin aerofoil theory coupled with a reduced set of the latter. The low-fidelity responses are then corrected according to few high-fidelity responses, as prescribed by an appropriate Design of Experiment (DOE), by means of a suitable tuning technique. A standard Genetic Algorithm GA) is hence utilised to find the global optimum, showing that a flexible aerofoil characterised by higher aerodynamic efficiency than its rigid counterpart. © 2012 by Vassili Toropov.

A two-dimensional model for predicting the fluid pick out and coated film thickness characteristics of a discrete cell direct gravure roll coater operating in reverse mode is derived. A novel multiscale approach is adopted for this purpose and the resulting equations solved numerically for inertia-less flow conditions. A system of stiff ordinary differential equations is found to be sufficient to capture the major gross flow features, while at the cell level the analysis is based on a finite element solution of the momentum and continuity equations. It represents the first such predictive model of its kind, with particular interest placed on the nature of both the pressure distribution and web-to-roll gap profile spanning the coating bead. The effect of key operating parameters, web-to-roll speed ratio, web tension, wrap-angle, capillary number and cell-geometry, on the degree of fluid pick out from gravure cells and the coated film thickness is explored. Although an idealised model, the trends observed show qualitative agreement with existing experimental data collected on a small-scale gravure coating rig and point the way forward to the eventual formulation of a full three-dimensional predictive model of the process. The formation of a thin liquid film onto a moving substrate is a commonly encountered industrial process, and one that is encountered in lubrication, oil extraction processes, and coating flows. The formation of such a film is analyzed via the analytical Stokes flow solution for the flow in a wedge bounded on one side by a free surface and on the other by a moving surface. The full solution is obtained by numerically integrating a set of ordinary differential equations from far downstream, in the region of the final film thickness. The results show excellent agreement with the results obtained by the Bretherton equation, the Ruschak equation, the Coyne and Elrod model, and a two-dimensional free surface finite element simulation of the problem.

Heat transfer in a plane laminar shear flow configuration consisting of two infinitely long plates orientated parallel to each other is investigated theoretically. The upper plate, which is planar, drives the flow; the lower one, which is fixed, has a regular sinusoidally varying profile. A closed form analytical solution for velocity, based on lubrication theory, together with a semi-analytic one for temperature, from application of Ritz's direct method, is derived for creeping flow. In addition, detailed numerical solutions are obtained from a finite element formulation of the weak form of the governing equations for mass, momentum and energy (temperature) conservation, enabling the effects of inertia to be explored. It is shown that changes in the mean plate separation, that is the geometry, and the level of inertia present affect the local hydrodynamic flow structure in the form of kinematically and inertially induced eddies, respectively. These in turn impact on the local "laminar thermal mixing", and consequently enhance the global heat transfer. Results are reported for a wide range of Peclet, Reynolds and Nusselt numbers with agreement between the two methods of solution, for the case of creeping flow, found to be extremely good. The key flow features that emerge are (i) For creeping flow and varying Peclet number, the thermal field is asymmetric for all values of the Peclet number other than the limiting conditions of zero and infinity, at which extremes the corresponding thermal field is symmetric. In the limit of infinite Peclet number the eddy becomes a basin of fluid at uniform temperature. (ii) Global heat transfer in the case of creeping flow, expressed in terms of the Nusselt number, for a given Peclet number increases as the mean plate separation decreases, that is as the local kinematically induced eddy structure becomes more pronounced.
