Summary
Rebecca Holloway is a Research Associate in the Section of Airways Disease at the NHLI. She graduated with a BSc in Biomedical Science from the University of Southampton in 2005 and subsequently went on to obtain her PhD from the Division of Infection, Inflammation and Repair in the School of Medicine at Southampton in 2009. Her PhD investigated the role of the proteinase elastase as an inflammatory mediator in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and data from this study has been presented at the American Thoracic Society annual conference (2007 and 2008).
Rebecca has continued in the field of COPD in her post-doctoral position at the NHLI and in particular is interested in the defective function of macrophages in this disease. She has investigated the effects of inhibiting the JAK/STAT signalling pathway in macrophages from COPD patients and data from this project has been presented at the European Respiratory Society annual congress in 2011 and 2012. Rebecca received a British Lung Foundation travel award to attend this conference in 2011. Her current research interests now include phenotyping non-smoking COPD caused by exposure to biomass fuels. This research is in collaboration with Chest Research Foundation in Pune, India. Rebecca is a member of the British Lung Foundation and the European Respiratory Society.
As well as her research, Rebecca also teaches transferable skills on the Biomedical Science BSc course and tutorials on the Respiratory BSc course. She is an e-mentor for the Nuffield mentoring scheme which aims to encourage young people from under priviledged backgrounds to apply to university and is also a STEMNET ambassador.
