Pereira FL, Silva GN, Vinter RB, 2001, Necessary conditions of optimality for vector-valued impulsive control problems with state constraints, Pages: 924-930

A vector-valued impulsive control problem is considered whose dynamics, defined by a differential inclusion, have to satisfy state constraints and are such that the vector fields associated with the singular term do not satisfy the so called Frobenius condition. A concept of robust solution based on a new reparametrization procedure is adopted in order to derive necessary conditions of optimality. These conditions are obtained by taking a limit of those for an appropriate sequence of auxiliary 'standard' optimal control problems approximating the original one. An example to illustrate the nature of the new optimality conditions is provided.

In this paper, the value function for an optimal control problem with endpoint and state constraints is characterized as the unique lower semicontinuous generalized solution of the Hamilton-Jacobi equation. This is achieved under a constraint qualification (CQ) concerning the interaction of the state and dynamic constraints. The novelty of the results reported here is partly the nature of (CQ) and partly the proof techniques employed, which are based on new estimates of the distance of the set of state trajectories satisfying a state constraint from a given trajectory which violates the constraint.

Simple directly verifiable conditions are derived under which there exists a state trajectory satisfying a specified state constraint. The conclusions differ from the kind of information provided by viability and invariance-type theorems, insofar as an estimate is provided of the distance (in the supremum norm) of the state trajectory from a specified state trajectory, in terms of the degree to which the specified state trajectory violates the state constraint. The constructions involved in the existence proof are related to ones previously employed by Soner to establish continuity properties of a value function arising in infinite-horizon state-constrained optimal control, but the accompanying analysis contains refinements to ensure a sub-Lipschitz property of the value function considered here. It is expected that this existence result will have a number of implications for systems theory and optimal control. Here we show how it leads to a non-degenerate maximum principle for state-constrained optimal-control problems, in situations where the standard necessary conditions give no useful information about minimizers.

It is generally accepted that failure to reason correctly during the early stages of software development causes developers to make incorrect decisions which can lead to the introduction of faults or anomalies in systems. Most key development decisions are usually made at the early system specification stage of a software project and developers do not receive feedback on their accuracy until near its completion. Software metrics are generally aimed at the coding or testing stages of development, however, when the repercussions of erroneous work have already been incurred. This paper presents a tentative model for predicting those parts of formal specifications which are most likely to admit erroneous inferences, in order that potential sources of human error may be reduced. The empirical data populating the model was generated during a series of cognitive experiments aimed at identifying linguistic properties of the Z notation which are prone to admit non-logical reasoning errors and biases in trained users.
