Huang Z, Zhang Q, Whatmore RW, 1998, Role of an intermetallic phase on the crystallization of sol-gel prepared lead zirconate titanate thin films, IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics, Pages: 151-154
Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films have been prepared by a sol-gel method and been characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A metastable Pt3Pb intermetallic phase has been identified. Perovskite PZT was found to nucleate on top of the intermetallic phase. The improved lattice match between the intermetallic (a0 = 4.05 angstroms) and perovskite PZT (a0 = 4.035 angstroms) as compared to between Pt (a0 = 3.9231 angstroms) and the perovskite is believed to substantially reduce the activation energy for the nucleation of perovskite on Pt. Using this effect, (111) perovskite PZT has been grown at a temperature as low as 440 °C. The crystallization kinetics studies gave an activation energy of 179 kJ/mole for the phase transformation from pyrochlore to perovskite.
Ricote J, Zhang Q, Whatmore RW, 1998, TEM investigation of rhombohedral PZT thin films, IEEE International Symposium on Applications of Ferroelectrics, Pages: 483-486
This work analyzes thin films of compositions within the rhombohedral phase of the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) system, and compares the results with previous reports on the structure and physical properties carried out on the same materials, but in the ceramic form. Irrespective of the special characteristics of thin films, the same structural features as in the ceramics were observed. This shows that the origin of the superlattice reflections is not related to a particular characteristic of the ceramic form, but to a fundamental aspect of the crystal structure. The influence of the domain configuration on the physical behaviour is also discussed and compared to the ceramic case.

Crack-free transparent thin films of ferroelectric Pb(Zr0.3, Ti0.7)O3 (PZT) with the perovskite structure were prepared by spin-coating a solution of complex alkoxides, followed by drying and then firing at the temperatures less than 500°C. The preparation of stock solution, drying, and firing of films was described. The coatings with selective orientations have been prepared by using selective processing parameters. The influence of low-temperature processing steps on texture development will be reported. The formation and growth of polymeric particles in the hydrolysis and condensation of PZT sol-gel precursor solutions have been investigated by using photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and by measuring their rheological properties. It has been possible to follow the growth of the particles in the sol by the different techniques used from initial values of <4nm up to ca 100nm. It has been shown that the particles are rods rather than spheres. The effects of particle shape and solution chemistry on the crystal phase formation and texture development will be discussed.

The formation and growth of polymeric particles during the hydrolysis and condensation of PbZr0.3Ti0.7O3 (PZT 30/70) sol-gel precursor solutions have been investigated by using photon correlation spectroscopy (PCS), small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and by measuring their rheological properties. The measurements showed that the growth of the particles in the transition of PZT sol to gel followed a simple polymerisation process. A model for the form of the aggregates is discussed which is applicable to PZT organometal-particle aggregation process in systems with acetic acid as a modifier.
