Summary

Overview

My research interests are focused on using routinely collected data to measure and explain variations in health service quality and safety with the aim of improving patient care. These are my principal research collaborations:

  1. NIHR- and BHF-funded projects (as PI, with Profs Derek Bell and Martin Cowie): risk adjustment methods (including machine learning) for death and other measures (NIHR study 1); measuring acute care use and mortality in heart failure and COPD (NIHR study 2); NICE guideline compliance in heart failure (HF study 1, HF study 2); and predicting mortality in primary care patients with heart failure (BHF study)
  2. Orthopaedics: NIHR-funded mixed-methods PROFOUND study on variation in the management of periprosthetic fractures (as PI, 2023-25, with teams from Leeds, Lancaster, Bristol and others); return to theatre and readmission metrics and assessment of treatment policies on patient outcomes (with Mark Loeffler)
  3. Child Health Unit (led by Prof Sonia Saxena: CHU) as Statistics Lead: assessing the impact of changes in primary care policies such as out of hours cover, vaccination and COVID-19
  4. GI surgery (with Lord Darzi's St Mary's group and the Surgical Epidemiology, Trials and Outcome Centre at St Mark's Hospital led Prof Omar Faiz): the introduction of laparoscopy, volume-outcome relation and failure to rescue
