Roger Sargent obtained his BSc in Chemical Engineering at Imperial College in 1947, and stayed on to work for a PhD on low temperature separation techniques under Professor Dudley Newitt. He worked as a design engineer with l''''Air Liquide in Paris from 1951 to 1958, then returned to the College as a Senior Lecturer, was appointed to a Chair of Chemical Engineering in1962, and to the Courtaulds Chair of Chemical Engineering in 1966.

He was Dean of the City and Guilds College from 1973 to 1976, Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering from 1975 to 1988 and Director of the Centre for Process Systems Engineering from its launch in August 1989 until he retired in 1992. He is now a Senior Research Fellow in the Centre.

He has been involved in the application of computers to engineering since their beginnings in the early fifties, and in 1990 was presented with the Computing in Chemical Engineering Award of the American Institute of Chemical Engineering "for more than thirty years visionary and inspiring work in Process Systems Engineering", and this year the Nordic Process Control Award.

He is a past-president of the Institution of Chemical Engineers, a founder Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, and a Foreign Associate of the US National Academy of Engineering, and has been awarded honorary doctorates by the Institut National Polytechnique de Lorraine and the Universities of Edinburgh and Liege.
