AB - The current waste management practices in Thailand have been analysed to identify changes that would be beneficial in achieving the criteria set by authorities for improvements in recycling and diversion from landfill to 2030. The numbers and combinations of selected treatment plants that would have to be introduced into Thailand to meet targets for diversion of biological waste from landfill and the production of energy over the planning period have been calculated for a number of scenarios. Sensitivity analyses are performed on the results obtained to account for changes in future assumptions on the amount of waste generated and the organic content of the residual waste. The methodology adopted in this work, to aid planning decisions on technology requirements into the future, was previously used to predict the treatment options for handling the organic fraction of waste generated in London. As a generic methodology, applied in this work to illustrate the types of results obtained from the analyses using specific sets of assumptions relevant to Thailand, it offers the capability and flexibility to take account of the effects on the outcome of any relevant scenarios that planners might wish to consider and any assumptions that they might wish to make.
