The stability of a viscous film flowing down a vertical fiber under the action of gravity is analyzed both experimentally and theoretically. At large or small film thicknesses, the instability is convective, whereas an absolute instability mode is observed in an intermediate range of film thicknesses for fibers of small enough radius. The onset of the experimental irregular wavy regime corresponds precisely to the theoretical prediction of the threshold of the convective instability.

For the first time the mechanism of transition from 2D waves to 3D waves in a viscous film falling along vertical liquid layer is understood. Linear stability of 2D solitons to 3D perturbations is analyzed. Destruction of singular waves and their transition to localized wave modes is analyzed numerically. Physical mechanism of 2D wave destruction is determined by destabilizing influence of capillary forces in transversal direction, Relay instability responsible for capillary jet destruction.

The density fingering of an exothermic autocatalytic reaction, where the solutal and thermal contribution to density changes were oppositely signed, was studied. The exothermic autocatalytic model was based on a vertically oriented two-dimensional porous media or Hele-Shaw cell. The competition between the solutal and thermal contribution led to thermal plumes for ascending autocatalytic fronts. For some parameter values, such as fingers of constant amplitude and wavelength, the descending fronts were found to behave strikingly different. Dispersion curves and nonlinear dynamics were used for discussing the observed differences between the ascending and descending fronts behaviors.
