With reference to a multipurpose batch pilot plant, the definition of procedures for cleaning-in-place (CIP) and the tuning of relevant cleaning parameters are examined. A dynamic simulation model is utilized to establish first a cleaning control procedure which permits easier tuning of the spray-rinsing and wash cycles and draining parameters, for cleaning a single vessel. Then, a new procedure is developed for simultaneously cleaning N vessels in parallel in about the same time required for a single vessel, without increasing the CIP system capacity.

The task of selecting a solvent or solvent mixture with desirable combination of physical properties, to meet the needs of specific applications, has largely been tackled using a combination of heuristics and costly experimental studies. This material selection problem is here formulated as the combinatorial molecular design problem of choosing a set of structural groups making up a target molecule with the desired properties as predicted by available group contribution techniques. A novel mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) technique is used to solve the problem yielding compounds with optimum value of an appropriate performance index, subject to material balances, process and design limitations and feasibility of molecular structures. The strategy is applied with excellent results to solvent design examples for liquid-liquid extraction and multicomponent gas absorption using varying combinations of objective functions and constraints to reflect directly a multiplicity of operational objectives.

A formulation is presented for the optimal selection of both equipment units and the network of connections for multipurpose batch plants so as to satisfy given production requirements for a variety of products. The model includes very general constraints and objective functions and permits to simultaneously optimise the structural aspects of the plant and the associated production schedule, accounting for both capital cost of equipment units and pipework, operating costs, and revenues. A special novelty of the formulation is that it provides the possibility of generating directly the optimal connectivity between process units, sizing and costing of all transfer lines, and the optimal storage policies (and associated vessel sizes, if any) for stable intermediates without the need for a priori assumptions (e.g. unlimited storage, etc). © 1992, Pergamon Press Ltd. A kinetic model was presented recently by Xie et al (1991) to describe the complex reactions occuring in the suspension polymerisation of vinyl chloride to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The model had been obtained in laboratory conditions; nonetheless the author suggested that it could be used for design and operation of large reactors. In this paper, the dynamic simulation model of an industrial scale polymerisation reactor is presented, incorporating the above kinetic model but for slightly different process conditions. A number of changes were required, and several parameters in the model had to be adjusted to match the measured plant conditions. The process of identifying and fitting the parameters to be adjusted is detailed. The final model matches very well plant data for several product grades and initiators.The model is then used to simulate the entire reaction process, including startup, temperature control and shut down. The predictive abilities of the model are explored in some unusual conditions, including a runaway case, for which plant data were available. The use of the model for operator training is briefly discussed. © 1992, Pergamon Press Ltd. All rights reserved.

The integration of three existing general purpose software packages for optimal design and scheduling, production management, and operating procedure synthesis is demonstrated. The issues involved, some practical results, and the benefits obtained are discussed with reference to an industrial example. A new model-based controller for the initial heat-up and subsequent temperature maintenance of exothermic batch reactors is presented. The controller was developed by using the Generic Model Control framework of P.L. Lee and G.R. Sullivan, which provides a rigorous and effective way of incorporating a nonlinear energy balance model of the reactor and the heat-exchange apparatus into the controller. It also allows the use of the same control algorithm for both heat-up and temperature maintenance, thereby eliminating the need to switch between two separate control algorithms as is the case with today's more commonly used strategies. Simulation studies show the new controller to be as good as the dual-mode controller for a nominal case for which both controllers are well tuned. However, the new controller is shown to be much more robust with respect to changes in process parameters and to model mismatch.
