It is important to consider practical methods for incorporating procedures in equation-oriented solvers in an efficient way. All four of the EO simulators reviewed by Perkins (1984) can in principle handle procedures, although use of this feature is explicitly mentioned for only one of them. Three out of the four would require finite differences to generate derivative information, the other one utilizes a Quasi Newton method for all equations. Why these may not be the most efficient methods is discussed in section 2, following a general presentation of the solution of mixed sets of equations and procedures. In sections 3 and 4 a method is outlined which permits building an efficient interface between equations and procedures. This method extends and generalizes the ideas applied by Lucia and Macchietto to thermodynamic procedures. Finally, some numerical results are presented in section 5.
