The integration of three existing general purpose software packages for optimal design and scheduling, production management, and operating procedure synthesis is demonstrated. The issues involved, some practical results, and the benefits obtained are discussed with reference to an industrial example. Such benefits include reduced engineering time, consistent models of both the process and the plant, and re-usability of the models. (from Authors)

A new model-based controller for the initial heat-up and subsequent temperature maintenance of exothermic batch reactors is presented. The controller was developed by using the Generic Model Control framework of P.L. Lee and G.R. Sullivan, which provides a rigorous and effective way of incorporating a nonlinear energy balance model of the reactor and the heat-exchange apparatus into the controller. It also allows the use of the same control algorithm for both heat-up and temperature maintenance, thereby eliminating the need to switch between two separate control algorithms as is the case with today's more commonly used strategies. Simulation studies show the new controller to be as good as the dual-mode controller for a nominal case for which both controllers are well tuned. However, the new controller is shown to be much more robust with respect to changes in process parameters and to model mismatch.

It is important to consider practical methods for incorporating procedures in equation-oriented solvers in an efficient way. All four of the EO simulators reviewed by Perkins (1984) can in principle handle procedures, although use of this feature is explicitly mentioned for only one of them. Three out of the four would require finite differences to generate derivative information, the other one utilizes a Quasi Newton method for all equations. Why these may not be the most efficient methods is discussed in section 2, following a general presentation of the solution of mixed sets of equations and procedures. In sections 3 and 4 a method is outlined which permits building an efficient interface between equations and procedures. This method extends and generalizes the ideas applied by Lucia and Macchietto to thermodynamic procedures. Finally, some numerical results are presented in section 5.
