Dr Simon Philbin is Director of Programme Management at Imperial College London, where he leads the Programme Management Office (PMO) focused on supporting a range of projects across the university. This portfolio includes European Commission funded collaborative research projects and strategic international commercial projects. He is also the Chairman and Director of Imperial College Projects Limited, which is a subsidiary company of Imperial that enables academic-driven commercial projects.
Dr Philbin joined Imperial in 2003 and previous roles include Associate Director of Enterprise Projects and Programme Director of the Institute of Shock Physics. Prior to Imperial he worked in scientific and managerial positions for QinetiQ Plc. and DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, Ministry of Defence) for 9 years. He holds a BSc (University of Birmingham) and PhD (Brunel University), both in chemistry as well as an MBA with distinction (Open University Business School). In 2009 Dr Philbin was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC).
He is published widely across several areas including project management, research & technology management, and chemistry. He has lectured at different universities and delivered presentations and keynote speeches at international conferences across North America, Asia and Europe. Dr Philbin is a recipient of the Franklin B. W. Woodbury Special Service Award and Merritt A. Williamson Best Paper Award from the American Society for Engineering Management (ASEM). Plus the Rod Rose Best Paper Award and Best Annual Symposium Paper Award from the Society of Research Administrators International.
Dr Philbin currently serves as the Secretary and Board Member of ASEM, Associate Editor of the Engineering Management Journal (EMJ), Editorial Board Member for the Journal of Research Administration (JRA) and as Visiting Research Fellow in the School of Business, Economics and Informatics at Birkbeck, University of London. Dr Philbin is also a Governor at St. Columba's Catholic Boys School in Bexleyheath.
