Summary
Background
Sam is an Orthopaedic Surgeon-Educator and full time PhD student with the Performing Science project at the Centre for Performance Science (ICL/RCM). She is a module lead and M Ed dissertation supervisor for the three modules of the new online Imperial College PG Cert/ blended PG Dip & M Ed Surgical Education. Sam's past work at Imperial focused on medical curriculum design and mapping using the Sofia curriculum mapping software, developed initially for Imperial College School of Medicine and now in use in medical schools and universities across Europe and Australia. She trained at Imperial College (MBBS/BSc) and completed her Higher Surgical Training in London in 2017, winning the Pulvertaft Prize of the British Society for Surgery of the Hand in 2017.
Medical Education
Sam was awarded an M Ed in Surgical Education from Imperial College with Distinction and the Faculty of Medicine Dean's Prize for Best Performance on the programme. Her dissertation explored how experts in surgery, stone carving and sculpture use their sensory experience (including touch, sound and vision) to make judgements and adjustments while they work. The study introduced methodological innovation to medical education research by using phenomenologically informed qualitative interview methods developed first for use in the study of expert musicianship and dance. She discussed this project in her BBC Radio 4 'Four Thought' programme which was broadcast in August 2020.
Research Fellowships and Affiliations
Sam is a Harvard Macy Institute (#HMIMuseum) Fellow (2021/22) in the Arts Museum Based Health Professions Education Fellowship Program. She was previously awarded a Churchill Fellowship (2017) to visit the Narrative Medicine Division at Columbia University and the Stanford 'Medicine and the Muse' program. Sam is an Honorary Research Fellow at the Institute of Philosophy, School of Advanced Study, University of London and has designed two funded workshops in the Science in Culture stream.
