Summary

Tony Cass is currently Professor of Chemical Biology in the Department of Chemistry and Institute of Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London and a Fellow of both the Royal Society of Chemistry and Society of Biology.
He trained originally as a chemist with degrees from the Universities of York and Oxford. His research interests are in the field of analytical biotechnology both in the use of molecular engineering and design to produce new reagents for biosensors and bioanalysis and in microfabrication for device structures. He pioneered the use of synthetic electron transfer mediators for enzyme biosensors and his work in this area led to the development of the first electronic blood glucose measuring system, commercialised by MediSense Inc. (now part of Abbott Diagnostics), and the award of the Royal Society's Mullard Medal (along with Professor HAO Hill FRS and Dr MJ Green) and a Chemical Landmark Award (with Professor HAO Hill FRS and Dr Graham Davis).
Most of his current research is focussed on using engineered proteins and nucleic acids in micro-and nano-structured materials and devices for both clinical and environmental analysis.
In addition to his academic research, he has been a member of several Research Council Committees and TSB panels, a member of the Scientific Advisory Boards of PlastiCell Ltd and SabiliTech Ltd. and has acted as a consultant to several European and US biotechnology companies. He has published over 150 papers and edited 3 books and is on the editorial boards of Nanobioscience and IET Proceedings Nanobiotechnology. In addition he is a Visiting Professor of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and was a Visting Professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and the University of Rome, La Sapienza

He is also a Founder and Director of Bio Nano Consulting Ltd., Europe's first consulting company spanning both Bio- and Nanotechnology and AquAffirm a company developing sensors for food and water quality assurance
