Tom graduated with a first class MChem degree from Newcastle University in 2016. As an undergraduate student he undertook a number of summer projects centred around microscopy and spectroscopy. His final year project was titled “Metal Enhanced Luminescence of Porous Silicon”, in which he prepared and characterised metal nanoparticle/porous silicon composites to explore plasmonic effects on the photoluminescence of nanocrystalline silicon. Tom joined the Ultrafast Optoelectronics Group in the Department of Chemistry at Imperial College London in 2016. His PhD project, titled “Ultrafast Optical Control of Molecular Nanodevices” (supervised by Dr. Artem Bakulin) will involve the development of advanced ultrafast multi-pulse infrared spectroscopy to control excited state dynamics in optoelectronic devices featuring molecular semiconductors and nanocrystal-based materials. His main research interest is the study of fundamental photophysics in novel nanomaterials, in particular quantum dots.
