Most leading proposals for linear-optical quantum computing (LOQC) usecluster states, which act as a universal resource for measurement-based(one-way) quantum computation (MBQC). In ballistic approaches to LOQC, clusterstates are generated passively from small entangled resource states usingso-called fusion operations. Results from percolation theory have previouslybeen used to argue that universal cluster states can be generated in theballistic approach using schemes which exceed the critical threshold forpercolation, but these results consider cluster states with unbounded size.Here we consider how successful percolation can be maintained using a physicalarchitecture with fixed physical depth, assuming that the cluster state iscontinuously generated and measured, and therefore that only a finite portionof it is visible at any one point in time. We show that universal LOQC can beimplemented using a constant-size device with modest physical depth, and thatpercolation can be exploited using simple pathfinding strategies without theneed for high-complexity algorithms.

The technical demands to perform quantum error correction are considerable.The task requires the preparation of a many-body entangled state, together withthe ability to make parity measurements over subsets of the physical qubits ofthe system to detect errors. Here we propose two trapped-ion experiments torealise error-correcting codes of arbitrary size to defend a single encodedqubit from dephasing errors. Novel to both of our schemes, which are achievableusing both Penning traps and Paul traps, is the use of a global entanglingphase gate. We make use of this entangling operation to significantly reducethe experimental complexity of state preparation and syndrome measurements. Wealso show, in our second scheme, that storage times can be increased further byrepeatedly teleporting the logical information between two codes supported bythe same ionic crystal to learn information about the locations of errors. Weestimate that a qubit encoded in such a crystal will remain a high fidelitystate for a time that is an order of magnitude longer than a qubit written to asingle confined ion.
