Tim Powell is a Research Associate of the Railway and Transport Strategy Centre (RTSC) within the Centre for Transport Studies at Imperial College London.
Tim joined RTSC from Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) where he worked as a Track Engineer in the Office of the Chief Engineer. Whilst working at MTM, Tim developed significant expertise in the field of track and civil engineering and asset management. He was extensively involved in the design and delivery of a new system of electronic rail lubricators across the MTM network which have significantly reduced rail and wheel wear. Tim authored the initial MTM Rail Lubrication standard and sat on the MTM Wheel-Rail Interface Committee and Melbourne Tunnel Project Wheel-Rail Interface Working Group. He has significant experience investigating various other track and civil issues whilst at MTM such as Train-Platform Interface and Direct Fixation Track.
Prior to working at MTM, Tim was a Rail Engineer at WSP where he completed Track and Civil design and drafting on major projects such as Caulfield to Dandenong Level Crossing Removal Project and the Springvale Road Level Crossing Removal Project from concept through to detailed design stages.
Tim has a Bachelor of Engineering in the field with Civil Engineering (First Class Honours) and a Bachelor of Commerce majoring in Finance from Monash University in Australia.
