A chirped pulse amplification laser configuration capable of particle acceleration through the driving of a plasma beatwave into saturation before modulation instabilities can grow is reported. The configuration is based on generating a single sub-ps, broad bandwidth pulse (approximately 16 nm) and stretching and filtering to select two wavelength components (separation approximately 7 nm). The two spectral components are temporally stretched (to >100 ps) and separated (by approximately 1 ns). The pulses are then amplified in a single Nd:glass chain to greater than 15 J per pulse. Using a single pass reflective grating compressor the pulses are temporally compressed to between 2 and 5 ps and automatically synchronized. Moreover, the system is capable of introducing a chirp into the actual beat, such that the compressed pulses can compensate for relativistic detuning of the plasma wave. The optimum laser amplification and recombination configuration for generating a saturated laser driven beatwave is presented and options for future work discussed.

<jats:p>An experiment has been performed with the LULI Multi-TeraWatt Laser. The acceleration of electrons injected in a plasma wave generated by the laser wakefield mechanism has been observed with a maximum energy gain of 1.5 MeV. It has been shown that the electrons deflected during the interaction, could scatter on the walls of the experimental chamber, and fake a high-energy signal. A special effort has been given in the electron detection to separate the accelerated electrons signal from the background noise.The experimental results agree with theoretical predictions and numerical simulations when 3D effects on the electron beam are taken into account.</jats:p>

Two approaches are used to extend the propagation distance of a very intense laser pulse well beyond a Rayleigh length xR in an underdense plasma. The first method injects the intense pulse into a preformed plasma fiber. The other one allows the intense pulse itself to create its own optical fiber by transversely modifying the refractive index of the plasma which occurs when the laser power exceed the critical power for relativistic self-guiding. Evidence of relativistic guiding is seen in images of either plasma recombination light or sidescattered pump light or its second harmonic.
